Ten Cruise Lines Announce Suspension Of Fuel Supplement

As oil prices continue to fall, 3 major cruise operators, Carnival Corp., Norwegian Cruise Line and Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd, have announced they will move toward eliminating fuel surcharges across their lines.

Carnival Corp. was the first to announce that fuel surcharges will be eliminated for cruises departing on or after 17 December 2008 on Carnival Cruise Lines, Costa Cruises, Cunard Line, Holland America Line, Princess Cruises and Seabourn. Norwegian Cruise Line and Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd will suspend fuel supplements for voyages on Azamara Cruises, Celebrity Cruises and Royal Carribean International on or after 1 January 2009.

The announcements are welcome news for cruisers who have faced increasing fuel surcharges since Fall 2007, as the price of oil rose dramatically. With global oil prices at more manageable levels, cruise lines are targeting 2010 as the year when surcharge-free cruising would begin again. Most lines have also implemented fuel surcharge refunds in the form of onboard credit for guests if oil prices remained stable at a pre-determined level.
