Historic Dual Christening For Costa Cruises

Italy’s Costa Cruises have set a new Guinness World Record with the christening of the 92,600-GRT Costa Luminosa and the 114,500-GRT Costa Pacifica. The 13th and 14th additions to its fleet, both ships were named in an elaborate ceremony of light and music at Costa Cruises’ headquarters, Genoa.

In keeping with the “Made in Italy” style, the Costa Luminosa was christened by Italian world and Olympic fencing champion Valentina Vezzali, while the Costa Pacifica was named by Israeli singer Noa, who is a Commander of the Order of the Star for Italian Solidarity. Following sailing tradition, both godmothers cut the ribbons and let 2 bottles of Aneri Prosecco wine break against the bows of the ships.

The festivities began with an aerial flypast over the port by the Frecce Tricolori National Aerobatics Team, followed by a gala dinner onboard the Costa Pacifica featuring an all-Italian menu prepared by Michelin-star chefs. The evening show, “An Italian Portrait in Music and Light”, featured leading Italian and international performers such as Mauro Pagani, creator of Costa Pacifica’s soundtrack.

Flagship of the Costa Cruise fleet, the Costa Luminosa is designed for an exclusive clientele, featuring the use of precious materials such as mother-of-pearl, ebony, hardwood and mosaic in her interior fittings. The “Ship of Light”, she can carry up to 2,826 guests in her 1,130 cabins and boasts a unique 4D cinema. Costa Pacifica, the “Ship of Music” is currently the largest Italian cruise ship in service, capable of accomodating 3,780 guests. She is the first cruise vessel in the world to feature an onboard recording studio for guests and each of her decks has its own unique music soundtrack.

Both vessels showcase Costa Cruises’ latest guest recreation facilities, including a Grand Prix simulator and Playstation World, as well as the luxury Samsara Spa. Costa Luminosa continues its maiden voyage from Civitavecchia to Amsterdam while the Costa Pacifica embarks on its maiden voyage sailing the Western Mediterranean.
