Holland America Line Continues Signature Of Excellence Upgrades

Holland America Line continues the implementation of its Signature of Excellence upgrades with the completion of phase 1 works on the ms Statendam. The 1,260-guest ship is now sailing a 14-day Southern Caribbean voyage from Fort Lauderdale after receiving a stem-to-stern refurbishment to its staterooms and public spaces. ms Statendam is the fourth ship in a series of 5 to receive the upgrades, with the ms Veendam, ms Rotterdam and ms Ryndam already sailing with the improved amenities while ms Maasdam is scheduled to be refitted in April 2011.

During the drydock refurbishment, ms Statendam’s staterooms received new soft goods enhancement with carpeting, desk and vanities resurfaced to match the new decor. Outside and Inside Staterooms are now redecorated in rich earth hues complemented by accents of sienna and gold, with decorative wall scones, drapery, accent pillows and beddings adding a touch of modern elegance. The Suites feature a contemporary colour scheme with a traditional twist, where dark-coloured carpeting and chocolate-coloured leather sofas contrast with maple casework and light colours on soft goods and draperies. 16 new Spa Staterooms have been created from existing staterooms near the ship’s Greenhouse Spa and Salon, boasting decor reflective of the earth’s natural elements, artwork and a counter-top water feature evoking feelings of serenity and relaxation.

The ship’s public areas have underwent a modification to incorporate some of Holland America Line’s latest dining and entertainment innovations. Canaletto, its popular casual dining Italian restaurant first introduced onboard the ms Eurodam, comes to life for dinner when a section of the Lido restaurant is transformed with glass partitions to create a distinct Italian ambience for diners, after which guests can retreat to the refreshed Ocean Bar or the multi-themed Mix. Converted from the old casino and piano bars, the space now houses 3 separate bars (Martini, Champagne and Spirits & Ales) serving their namesakes.

For entertainment, the high-energy Casino was redesigned and the main show lounge turned into the new Showroom at Sea, combining modern stage technology and decor with the ambiance of a glamourous nightclub. The venue will host new show concepts along with stage productions for guests seated in remodeled seats and movable white-linen tables and chairs with cafe lamps, replicating an old-Hollywood atmosphere. ms Statendam also gets her own Merabella high-end jewellery boutique, which headlines the refurbished main shopping area.

Apart from hardware upgrades, the line has broadened its onboard programming with its Explorations Team, comprising staff members specializing in niche areas ranging from technology to travel, offering guests a range of enriching and entertaining activities. Amongst the experts is the Cruise Director, a Party Planner, a Travel Guide, Dance Directors and a Techspert, while the Librarian will also be onboard to lead a book club on cruises lasting 14 days or more.

ms Statendam will receive phase 2 of the refurbishment in 2012 where more work will be done to the aft of the ship, including the creation of a resort-style pool concept called The Retreat and the new Lanai category staterooms. Holland America Line has invested more than USD 525 million in the Signature of Excellence initiatives to upgrade its mid-sized ships.
