Celebrity Eclipse Named In Southampton

Celebrity Cruises yesterday officially named its newest ship, the 122,000-GRT Celebrity Eclipse, in her homeport of Southampton. British ocean-racing yachtswoman and breast cancer survivor Emma Pontin served as the ship’s godmother, cutting the pink ribbon at a ceremony in the vessel’s theater that released the traditional bottle of champagne against the Celebrity Eclipse’s smokestack. In a day of celebration, Celebrity Cruises sponsored the first “Celebrity Sunwalk” which saw thousands of men, women and families walk through Southampton to raise funds and awareness about breast cancer for the charity “Walk the Walk”, after which participants viewed the naming ceremony live from a big screen in the shadow of the ship.

It has been a busy run-up for the crew of the Celebrity Eclipse and Celebrity Cruises since it formally accepted ownership the 2,850-guest vessel. Originally planned to embark travel industry and media guests on a 2-day promotional cruise, the line instead opted to cancel the initial celebrations and deployed her to Bilbao, Spain, to assist in the repatriation of 2,200 standed British holidaymakers in the wake of the European air traffic disruption from the Icelandic volcano eruption.

The third of 5 ships in the Solstice-class, Celebrity Eclipse bears the same stylish design and groundbreaking innovations introduced on her sister ships (Celebrity Solstice and Celebrity Equinox), as well as several industry-firsts. Dedicated to the UK market, she will offer cruisers luxury accomodation onboard her 11 types of staterooms and suites, including the new AquaClass category where guests enjoy unlimited access to many of the AquaSpa amenities and gourmet dining presented at each of her specialty restaurants, including Blu, Murano, Silk Harvest and Tuscan Grill. In addition, the new Qsine restaurant is unique to the Celebrity Eclipse, where guests dine on creations such as “Sushi Lollipops”, “Meatball Trilogy”, “Chitinis” and “Popcorn Fish & Chips”.

The ship is also home to the first-ever Celebrity iLounge, a hip and modern space combining the ambience of a lounge with the conveniences of an internet cafe. Guests will be able to find easy access to the internet on the 26 workstations, participate in enriching and entertaining technology courses conducted by certified staff, or try out and purchase the latest products from Apple. Celebrity Eclipse also features signature entertainment options such as The Lawn Club with real, growing grass, The Hot Glass Show in partnership with the Corning Museum of Glass and varied performances at the Eclipse Theatre.

Following her christening, Celebrity Eclipse will sail a series of short, 4-night cruises to Cork and present Mediterranean and Russia/Scandinavia cruises throughout the summer, calling at ports such as Barcelona, Berlin, Brugges, Cagliari, Copenhagen, Dubrovnik, Gibraltar, Helsinki, Malaga, Palermo, Palma de Mallorca, Provence, Seville, Split, St. Petersburg, Stockholm, Talinn, Venice and Vigo. The ship repositions to Fort Lauderdale in the winter season to cruise the Caribbean.
