Costa Cruises Targets Golf Vacation Market

Golf enthusiasts who have had to choose between their game and embarking on a cruise holiday now need not do so. Genoa-based Costa Cruises is offering golfers sailing on the Costa Deliziosa and her sister ship Costa Luminosa a complete golf program, with a state-of-the-art simulator onboard and shore excursions to some of the best golf courses in Europe, the Mediterranean and the Middle East.

Golf Simulator and Putting Green

Based on the latest technology, Costa’s Virtual Golf  is one of the most highly evolved simulator systems onboard a ship. Using real golf clubs and balls, the system lets guests play on an 18-hole course inspired by 37 top golf courses in the world, complete with visuals recreating a live PGA event. The Costa Deliziosa and Costa Luminosa also boast a custom putting green on deck 10. Constructed using synthetic turf, the 100-square meter facilities feature 6 different holes for guests to practice their short game.

Shore Excursions

Beyond the ships, discerning golfers will also have the opportunity to play at world-class golf facilities at various port calls. The 2010 summer season will see both vessels cruising Scandinavia and the Baltic Sea, calling at ports including Amsterdam, Andalsannes, Bergen, Copenhagen, Flam, Geiranger, Giavdal, Hellsylt, Helsinki, Honningsvag, Oslo, St. Petersburg, Stavanger, Stockholm, Tallinn, Tromso, Trondheim. Amongst the golfing shore excursions offered are visits and a game at Norway’s Baerum Golfklub Oslo and the Meland Golf Club, as well as Sweden’s Kungängen Golf Club.

On the winter itineraries in the Middle East, the 2 ships will sail from Dubai to visit Abu Dhabi, Bahrain, Fujairah and Muscat. Golfers of all handicaps will be able to play at famous golf clubs and international standard courses in the UAE, including the Abu Dhabi Golf Club and Dubai’s The Els Club designed by US Open and British Open winner Ernie Els.
