W Hotels Expands Hometown Footprint With W New York Downtown

Starwood’s W Hotels has unveiled the new W New York Downtown earlier this month, expanding the brand’s hometown portfolio since its birth more than 10 years ago in New York City. Located in the city’s historic Financial District on the corner of Washington and Albany Streets, the hotel features 58 floors of modern design and stylish amenities with 217 guestrooms and 223 residences offering sweeping views of the Hudson River, Battery Park and landmarks like the Statue of Liberty and the Empire State Building.


Designed by lead architect Gwathmey Siegel and Associates, the glass-clad tower sits atop a 5-storey podium featuring a subtle grid pattern of white, grey and clear glass panels. The interior design was created by Berlin-based GRAFT studio, based on a creative idea of a “ripple effect” creating an internal movement that will resound through the Downtown community. Manifesting this concept to guests as they arrive at the hotel is a spectacular light shower installation comprised of 1,260 individually hung clear, teardrop diffusers illuminated by fiber-optic projectors, created by renowned UK light sculptor Bruce Munro and suspended from the second-floor ceiling.


The concept continues in the 217 guestrooms and suites around the perimeter, ascending up the walls and across the room with a glowing light effect. Each accommodation features the W signature bed with feather-top mattress and 350-thread count Egyptian cotton sheets, spacious bathroom with walk-in rainforest shower and Bliss spa products, 37-inch flatscreen television with W CD/DVD library, iPod docking station, high-speed internet access, dual-line cordless telephones with voicemail, workdesk, in-room safe, fully-stocked Munchie Box and coffee-/tea-making facilities.


W New York Downtown is also the site of the first bar & grill concept for the acclaimed BLT Restaurants, with the bi-level BLT Bar & Grill. Under the direction of Executive Chef Christophe Bellanca, an extensive menu of New American classics and shareable bar snacks are available at street level, while the stylish second floor dining room offers fresh salads, grilled meats, market-driven pastas, pizzas, sandwiches, sides and desserts that BLT has come to be known for. The brand’s signature Living Room Bar & Terrace on the fifth floor reflects Manhattan’s pulsating vibes with a dramatic Lamella curtain draped concept featuring LED lighting recessed within and floor-to-ceiling views of the city as guests sip on specialty cocktails from resident mixologist Charlotte Voisey, including the “Five Points”, “Bond Street Sparkler”, “Brooklyn Bridge” and “The Jitney”.


The hotel boasts more than 371 square meters of flexible meeting space, catering to events of various sizes and supported by the 24-hour, full-service WIRED business center. For recreation, the state-of-the-art SWEAT fitness facility provides guests with iPod and LCD television-equipped cardiovascular machines, as well as an assortment of yoga and pilates equipment. Like her sister hotels around the world, guests can utlize the signature Whatever/Whenever service to arrange almost any request as long as it is legal.
