Historic Sihanoukville Hotel Joins Sterling Hotels

The historic Independence Hotel, Resort & Spa in Sihanoukville has become the first property in Cambodia to join Preferred Hotel Group’s Sterling Hotels brand. Designed by French architect M. Mondet with interiors from King Norodom Sihanouk, the 7-storey hotel first opened in 1964 and was once Cambodia’s tallest building as well as a showpiece for the royal family, hosting dignitaries including former US first lady Jacqueline Kennedy in its heyday.

Restored to its former glory in 2007, the resort offers 88 guestrooms and suites overlooking the clear waters of the Gulf of Siam. Each offers guests comfortable bedding, spacious bathroom, flatscreen television with cable programming, high-speed internet access, IDD telephone, workdesk, in-room safe, minibar and coffee-/tea-making facilities. 7 additional guestrooms and villas are also due to be completed in the last quarter of 2011, catering to families or couples seeking greater space and privacy.

The hotel’s Coral Restaurant is an all-day dining outlet offering authentic Khmer and international cuisine, while the Sunset Terrace specializes in dishes using freshly-caught local seafood that diners can enjoy on the al fresco deck by the beach. The aptly named History Lounge Bar is a throwback to the days when the country’s elite let their hair down at the hotel, serving up a selection of cocktails, drinks and light snacks.

Independence Hotel, Resort & Spa is also one of few resorts in Sihanoukville with conference facilities catering for up to 650 guests. The Camelia and Hibiscus Ballrooms offer more than 1,000 square meters of flexible event space, after which delegates can enjoy the excellent leisure facilities at the resort, including the white sandy beach, an outdoor swimming pool, fitness center and the soon-to-open Jouvence Spa with its 12 treatment rooms.

Preferred Hotel Group’s portfolio in Cambodia now includes 3 luxurious properties in Siem Reap and Sihanoukville. The Independence Hotel, Resort & Spa joins Summit Hotels & Resorts’ Angkor Palace Resort & Spa and the Alila Sothea under the Preferred Boutique collection.
