Strategic Airlines To Rebrand, Launch New Routes

Australia’s Strategic Airlines has announced that it is to rebrand and repackage itself as a low cost carrier in October 2011, with new flights to Honolulu and extra frequencies to Phuket added. To be known as Air Australia, the airline will also operate a domestic trunk route for the first time when it launches services between Brisbane and Melbourne.

Citing an opportunity from the repositioning of Virgin Australia as a full-service carrier to compete against Qantas and the dominance of low cost flying, Strategic Airlines’ own rebrand is part of a greater strategy to capture the low cost segment of the international and domestic market in Australia. The airline has avoided competing in Sydney with local and foreign carriers (such as Jetstar and Hawaiian Airlines), focusing instead on consolidating its operations in Brisbane and Melbourne.

Brisbane – Honolulu, Melbourne – Honolulu

Flight VC 001 will depart Brisbane at 1800 hrs on Wednesdays and Fridays (except the week of 12 – 18 December 2011 when the flight operates on Wednesday and Saturday), arriving in Honolulu at 0725 hrs. The return flight, VC 002, takes off from Honolulu International Airport at 1015 hrs on Thursdays and Saturdays (except the week of 12 – 18 December 2011 when the flight operates on Friday and Sunday) to land back at Brisbane International Airport at 1600 hrs the next day.

Ex-Melbourne, flight VC 011 will take off from Melbourne Airport at 1900 hrs on Thursdays and Saturdays (except the week of 12 – 18 December 2011 when the flight operates on Friday and Sunday), landing at Honolulu International Airport at 0835 hrs. The return flight, VC 012, will depart Honolulu at 0900 hrs to arrive back in Melbourne at 1725 hrs the next day.

Both flights will also have a third weekly frequency added from 25 March 2012, operating at the same timings on Sundays, with the return leg operating on Mondays. Strategic Airlines will fly its Airbus A330-200 jets on the routes.

Additional Phuket Flights Planned

From March 2012, Strategic Airlines will add a third weekly flight to Phuket from Brisbane and Melbourne.

Flight VC 246 will also operate on Tuesdays, departing Brisbane at 1205 hrs and arriving in Phuket at 1755 hrs, with the return flight VC 247 taking off from the Thai island at 1850 hrs and landing back in Brisbane at 0640 hrs on Wednesday morning. Flight VC 240 from Melbourne will also operate on Sundays, departing at 1125 hrs and landing in Phuket at 1620 hrs. The return flight, VC 241, departs Phuket at 1930 hrs to arrive back in Melbourne at 0755 hrs on Monday morning.
