China Airlines Becomes 15th Skyteam Member

Taipei-based carrier China Airlines has officially joined Skyteam, opening a host of benefits for its passengers and bolstering the airline alliance’s presence in the Greater China region. The airline celebrated the event with a ceremony held at its headquarters yesterday and also took the opportunity to present a refreshed brand image, as well as outline plans for the future.

Boost to Alliance Network, Reciprocal Benefits

China Airlines’ entry brings 3 new destinations (Miyazaki, Okinawa and Surabaya) to Skyteam’s network and adds Taipei to its list of Asian hubs. The airline’s diverse passenger and cargo network throughout Asia Pacific, Europe and North America complements that of fellow members China Eastern Airlines and China Southern Airlines to create a comprehensive coverage in Northeast Asia.

Effective immediately, passengers will also be able to earn and redeem miles on services operated by the other 14 member airlines. Similarly, members of the other Skyteam-affiliated frequent flier programs can also earn and redeem miles when flying on a China Airlines-operated flight.

Updated Brand Identity and Planned Product Upgrades

In celebration of its membership into Skyteam, China Airlines unveiled a revitalized brand image that integrates its famed plum blossom and Chinese seal imagery. The new identity was showcased on a Boeing 747-400 jet painted in the Skyteam livery and will be progressively introduced to the rest of its fleet, signage and marketing materials. Company executives also revealed plans to introduce full-flat seating for its Dynasty business class in the next 2 years, while contemplating the removal of First Class.
