Airlines Plan Return To Libya

European and Middle Eastern carriers are preparing to restart flights to Libya, following the end of the country’s civil war, during which commercial aviation services were suspended. Major airlines, including Star Alliance members Austrian Airlines, BMI, Lufthansa and Turkish Airlines, Oneworld’s Malev and Royal Jordanian, Skyteam’s Alitalia, as well as Qatar Airways from the Middle East, have unveiled schedules for flights to Tripoli and Benghazi.

 

Alitalia

Italian flag carrier Alitalia returns to Tripoli on 2 November 2011, with 5 times weekly flights operated using an Airbus A320 jet. Flight AZ 868 will depart Rome at 1120 hrs (Mondays, Thursdays, Fridays and Sundays) / 1230 hrs (Wednesdays), arriving in Tripoli at 1415 hrs (Mondays, Thursdays, Fridays and Sundays) / 1525 hrs (Wednesdays). The aircraft returns as flight AZ 869, taking off from Tripoli International Airport at 1515 hrs (Mondays, Thursdays, Fridays and Sundays) / 1625 hrs (Wednesdays) to land back at Leonardo da Vinci-Fiumicino Airport at 1615 hrs (Mondays, Thursdays, Fridays and Sundays) / 1725 hrs (Wednesdays).

Austrian Airlines

Star Alliance member Austrian Airlines is scheduled to resume its Vienna – Tripoli route from 1 December 2011 with a 3 times weekly service operated by an Airbus A319 aircraft. Flight OS 891 will depart Vienna at 0945 hrs on Mondays, Thursdays and Sundays, arriving in Tripoli at 1335 hrs. The return flight, OS 892, takes off from Tripoli International Airport at 1450 hrs to land back at Vienna International Airport at 1645 hrs.

BMI

Operated with an Airbus A320 aircraft, BMI’s daily London (Heathrow) – Tripoli service will be resumed from 21 November 2011. Flight BD 469 departs London at 1045 hrs, arriving in Tripoli at 1620 hrs. On the return leg, flight BD 470 takes off from the Libyan capital at 1715 hrs to land back in London at 1845 hrs.

Lufthansa

European giant Lufthansa will reconnect Frankfurt with Tripoli from 1 December 2011 when it resumes daily service on the route with an Airbus A320 aircraft. Flight LH 1312 will depart Frankfurt at 1020 hrs (Tuesdays and Sundays) / 1025 hrs (Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays) / 1035 hrs (Mondays and Fridays), arriving in Tripoli at 1415 hrs (Tuesdays and Sundays) / 1420 hrs (Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays) / 1430 hrs (Tuesdays and Sundays). The return flight, LH 1313, takes off from Tripoli at 1525 hrs (Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays) / 1530 hrs (Mondays and Fridays) for a 1740 hrs (Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays) / 1745 hrs (Mondays and Fridays) landing back in Frankfurt.

Malev Hungarian Airlines

Oneworld member Malev has also announced its return to Tripoli, with flights due to relaunch on 20 November 2011. The service will operate 5 times weekly on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Sundays with a Boeing 737 jet. Flight MA 300 will depart Budapest at 2335 hrs, arriving in Tripoli at 0320 hrs the next morning, before turning around as flight MA 301 taking off from Tripoli International Airport at 0430 hrs to land back at Budapest Liszt Ferenc International Airport at 0615 hrs.

Qatar Airways

Doha-based Qatar Airways has announced it will launch flights from the Qatari capital to Benghazi, its second Libyan destination after Tripoli, which remains suspended. Operating 4 times a week with an Airbus A320 jet, flight QR 556 departs Doha at 0930 hrs on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays to arrive in Benghazi at 1410 hrs. The return flight, QR 557, takes off from Benina International Airport at 1510 hrs to land back at Doha International Airport at 2050 hrs.

Royal Jordanian Airlines

One of the first airlines to announce a return to Libya, Royal Jordanian resumed flying the Amman – Benghazi route 2 times weekly last month, with flight RJ 531 departing Amman at 1200 hrs and arriving in Benghazi at 1505 hrs on Mondays and Fridays. The return flight, RJ 532, takes off from Benina International Airport at 1555 hrs, landing back at Queen Alia International Airport at 1830 hrs.

 

The airline has announced plans to resume Amman – Tripoli flights and is expected to reveal schedules shortly.

Turkish Airlines

Effective 30 October 2011, Turkish Airlines will increase frequencies on the Istanbul – Tripoli (Mitiga) route from 4 times weekly to 6 times weekly. Flight TK 635 will now depart Ataturk International Airport at 0925 hrs daily except Fridays, arriving at Tripoli’s Mitiga Military Airport at 1230 hrs. The Boeing 737-800 operating the route will then fly the return flight, TK 636, taking off from Libya at 1325 hrs to land back in Istanbul at 1615 hrs.
