South African Airways Launch Beijing Flights

South African Airways has launched flight operations between Johannesburg and Beijing. The Star Alliance member’s inaugural flight touched down in China on Tuesday evening, following a 15-hour journey with company executives, invited guests and passengers onboard.

Departing O. R. Tambo International Airport at 0020 hrs every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, flight SA 288 lands at Beijing Capital International Airport at 2050 hrs. The Airbus A340-600 jet turns around to operate the return flight, SA 289, which departs the Chinese capital city at 2320 hrs to arrive back in Johannesburg at 0810 hrs the next morning.

South African Airways becomes the only airline to connect South Africa’s largest city and the Chinese capital with a nonstop service. Flight timings have been designed to allow for convenient connections to the airline’s pan-African network, as well as leverage the domestic network of its alliance partner Air China from Beijing.

The new route is intended to boost commercial and tourism ties between both countries, following a comprehensive strategic partnership forged last year. The airline is also looking to establish Johannesburg as an aviation transit hub between Asia and South America, capitalizing on its successful Johannesburg – Sao Paolo route.
