Embattled Costa Cruises Christens Refurbished Ship

Embattled Costa Cruises, Europe’s largest cruise line, launched the refurbished Costa neoRomantica last Friday at a private ceremony in Savona, Italy.

The low-key christening, attended by the Bishop of Savona, His Excellency Vittorio Lupi, the line’s top management, local civil and military authorities, began with a one-minute silence in respect and mourning for the victims of the sinking of the Costa Concordia. Following maritime tradition, the ship’s godmothers Francesca Scuffi (a top member of the Costa Club) and Gabriella Gentile (the most junior crewmember onboard the Costa Concordia on its 13 January 2012 sailing) smashed a bottle of champagne against her hull to bless the vessel.

Sweden’s Tillberg Design and London-based Syntax developed the interior restyling of the ship, which also saw 2 half-decks added along with 111 new cabins. In addition, 120 cabins and suites with private balconies were created from the existing structure, each furnished with luxury comforts and technology. Gourmet dining promises to be a key feature onboard the Costa neoRomantica, with the addition of the neoRomantica Club Restaurant, Giardino Restaurant and Pizzeria Capri to tantalize the tastebuds. Caffetteria’s wide range of handmade chocolates and pralines are perfect throughout the day and cheese lovers can head to the Verona Wine & Cheese Bar for its more than 100 cheeses from around the world, accentuated by over 80 wine labels chosen in conjunction with the Associazione Italiana Sommelier.

Costa neoRomantica also gains the line’s Samsara Spa. Covering an area of 4,200 square meters across 2 decks, the facility is well-equipped with treatment rooms, thalassotherapy pool, tepidarium, laconium, aromatic steam room and UVA solarium. A gymnasium with iPod-compatible machines and expansive windows provides spectacular ocean views as guests go through their workout routine.

Currently operating 11-night Canary Island cruises out of Savona, Costa neoRomantica will be positioned in Scandinavia sailing itineraries exploring Denmark, France, Germany, the Netherlands and Norway for the 2012 summer cruise season. She will embark on a 107-night Eastern Hemisphere World Cruise, departing Savona for New Zealand via the Middle East, Indian subcontinent, Singapore, Indonesia and Australia.
