Airlines Plan New Flights, Increased Frequencies To Yangon
Myanmar’s travel and tourism market is poised to enter a new period of growth following recent political developments in the country. Identifying near-term opportunities, airlines have rapidly announced the resumption of services and frequency increases to the country’s gateway, Yangon.
Thai boutique carrier Bangkok Airways announced the addition of a third daily flight on the Bangkok – Yangon route from 28 October 2012. Flight PG 705 will take off from Suvarnabhumi International Airport at 2015 hrs, landing at Yangon International Airport at 2130 hrs. The ATR72 aircraft overnights in Myanmar before operating the return flight, PG 706, the next morning at 0715 hrs and arriving back in Bangkok at 0930 hrs.

Currently flying 4 times weekly between Taipei (Taoyuan) and Yangon, China Airlines will be adding a fifth weekly flight on the route from 10 September 2012 using a 2-class Boeing 737-800 jet configured with 8 Dynasty business and 150 Economy Class seats. Flight CI 7915 will depart Taipei at 0715 hrs on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays, arriving in Yangon at 1010 hrs, before returning at 1110 hrs as flight CI 7916 for a 1635 hrs arrival back in Taipei.

Middle Eastern carrier Qatar Airways has revealed plans to resume its Doha – Yangon service from 3 October 2012. Beginning with 3 times weekly flights on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Sundays, the airline will raise frequencies to daily service from 28 October 2012 using an Airbus A319 jet. Flight QR 618 will depart Doha at 2105 hrs, arriving in Yangon at 0629 hrs the next morning. The return flight, QR 619, takes off from Yangon International Airport at 0800 hrs to land back at Doha International Airport at 1145 hrs.

Singapore Airlines subsidiary Silkair will add 2 flights each week on the Singapore – Yangon route from 25 May 2012, bringing overall frequency to 16 flights weekly. Departing Singapore at 2210 hrs on Fridays and Sundays, flight MI 520 will arrive in Yangon at 2330 hrs. The Airbus A320 jet turns around to operate flight MI 519, taking off from Yangon International Airport at 0025 hrs and landing back at Singapore Changi International Airport at 0500 hrs.

Beginning 28 October 2012, Thai Airways will add a third daily flight between Bangkok and Yangon, using a Boeing 737-400 aircraft. Flight TG 301 will depart Bangkok at 1300 hrs, arriving in Yangon at 1345 hrs before returning as flight TG 302 at 1445 hrs, landing back at Suvarnabhumi International Airport at 1640 hrs.
