Saudia Joins Skyteam
Saudia, the flag carrier of Saudi Arabia, has officially joined the ranks of Skyteam, becoming the alliance’s first Middle Eastern member. The airline also took the opportunity to unveil its new brand identity and 2 special-liveried aircraft, an Airbus A320 deployed on regional and European routes as well as a Boeing 777-200 used on long-haul operations, during a inauguration ceremony in Jeddah.
With hubs in Dammam, Jeddah and Riyadh, Saudia extends Skyteam’s reach in the Middle East, Indian subcontinent and North Africa. The airline adds 51 new destinations to Skyteam’s global network, including Alexandria, Colombo and Islamabad. Travellers will also gain access to 23 domestic points within Saudi Arabia.
The airline’s frequent flyer programme, Alfursan, will also be integrated with the various frequent flyer programmes of its Skyteam partners. Passengers will be eligible to earn and redeem miles, while enjoying reciprocal benefits including lounge access and the alliance’s SkyPriority service when flying any of its 16 members.
Saudia currently operates a fleet of 103 jets to 78 destinations. The airline is slated to complete its turnaround program in 2013, under which it will modernize its aircraft fleet and commercial systems, as it seeks to compete against its Gulf rivals.
