Etihad Plans Sao Paulo Flights

Etihad Airways, the national airline of the UAE, has outlined plans to begin flights from Abu Dhabi to Sao Paulo, its first destination in South America. Scheduled to launch on 1 June 2013, the daily service will mark the airline’s entry into the exclusive club of carriers that fly to 6 continents.

Flight EY 191 will depart Abu Dhabi daily at 0815 hrs, arriving in Sao Paulo at 1620 hrs. The return service, EY 190, takes off from Guarulhos International Airport at 2245 hrs, landing back at Abu Dhabi International Airport at 2030 hrs the next day. Etihad will fly a 3-class Airbus A340-600 jet, configured with 12 Diamond First, 32 Pearl Business and 248 Coral Economy class seats on the route.

Demand for travel between Brazil and the Middle East has increased in recent years, with the airline’s rivals Emirates, Qatar Airways, Turkish Airlines and Israel’s El Al serving the country from their respective hubs. Etihad is eyeing business and leisure travel for demand on the route, with flights timed to provide for onward connections to destinations within the Gulf Cooperation Council, Indian Subcontinent and Asia.

Based in Abu Dhabi, Etihad continues to grow with ambitions to serve up to 100 destinations with a fleet of more than 150 aircraft by 2020. This year, the airline has announced Addis Ababa, Ahmedabad, Basra, Lagos and Washington DC as its new destinations, while a codeshare with Vietnam Airlines will eventually pave the way for services to Vietnam.
