Now Open: SLS South Beach

SLS Hotels, the boutique brand from hotelier Sam Nazarian, has opened its second location in Miami’s South Beach. Occupying the site of the former Ritz Plaza hotel with direct beach access, iconic designer Philippe Starck has created a dream world that blends Latin, Asian, contemporary and art deco influences. An expansive terrace reminiscent of French riviera cafes greets guests, complemented by Moroccan tiles and a collection of furniture that exudes French elegance and Italian sophistication, while the reception area reminds of a retro American summer camp with an overhanging antique wood kayak.

132 guestrooms and suites present a look befitting of French aristocracy, featuring generous doses of white and pink. Each has King-sized beds with plush bedding and an oversized white sofa, while a glass-enclosed rainforest shower in the bathroom, 42-inch LCD television, iPad and high-speed internet access offer modern conveniences. Musician Lenny Kravitz lent his eclectic ethos to the hotel, creating the penthouse suite and a private bungalow.

James Beard Award-winning chef Jose Andres’ opens his Miami outpost in the form of The Bazaar, showcasing a collection of imaginative culinary experiences in true Spanish style mixed with local Latin influences. Asian masterchef Katsuya Uechi, whose sushi bars have received top Zagat ratings, lends his culinary expertise in sushi and robata dishes to the eponymous Katsuya, which also features the intimate Dragon Room lounge. With its eye-catching bull head, the casual Bar Centro offers a relaxed environment amid light gray walls, vivid Cuban paintings and handwriting-covered columns.

2 swimming pools offer plenty of space for sun worshippers. 1 of these is dedicated to adult guests as part of the Hyde Beach day and night club, an energetic space embracing the vibrancy of South Beach. To escape the party, guests can indulge in some quiet time at The Salon, designed by Philippe Starck as a celestial dreamscape pampering the body and soul.

SLS South Beach joins its sister property in Beverly Hills as the second hotel of the award-winning brand. sbe is currently developing a third property, the SLS Las Vegas, on the site of the former Sahara Hotel & Casino.
