Independence Of The Seas To Undergo Enhancement

Cruise giant Royal Caribbean International has announced details for the upcoming revitalization of its 3,634-passenger Independence of the Seas in April 2013. The Southampton-based ship will receive a general refurbishment and new dining, entertainment and recreational enhancements as part of a major fleetwide upgrade programme.

Guests will soon be able to enjoy new dining options including Italian trattoria Giovanni’s Table and gourmet bakery The Cupcake Cupboard, while a giant outdoor cinema screen entertains with movies under the stars. Younger cruisers benefit from a new baby and toddler nursery and a new digital way finding system helps guests find their way around the ship.

When she re-emerges in May 2013, Independence of the Seas will return to homeport in Southampton. She will offer a series of new itineraries, including 8-night Norway cruises, 14-night Norway and Cork sailings, 14-night Mediterranean voyages and 12-night Canary Island cruises. The ship will also operate more short cruises, such as 2-night itineraries to Le Havre and 3-night cruises to the French port and Zeebrugge in Belgium.

Beginning in 2011 with the revitalization of Radiance of the Seas, Royal Caribbean International has successfully extended popular features from its flagship Oasis-class vessels to several ships. Independence of the Seas joins 5 other ships that underwent the upgrades in 2012 – Rhapsody of the Seas, Mariner of the Seas, Grandeur of the Seas, Serenade of the Seas and Enchantment of the Seas, while the Asia-based Legend of the Seas is due to emerge later this month with the enhanced offering.
