Viking River Cruises Christens New Longships

Viking River Cruises wrote itself into the record books this week by simultaneously inaugurating 10 additions to its fleet. Certified by an adjudicator from Guinness World Records, the milestone took place simultaneously in Amsterdam and Germany’s Neptun Shipyard.

Invited guests in the Dutch city enjoyed remarks by the godmothers of the Viking Aegir, Viking Atla, Viking Bragi, Viking Embla, Viking Forseti, Viking Jarl, Viking Rinda, Viking Skadi, Viking Tor and Viking Var, as well as a presentation on the growth of river cruising by company chairman Torstein Hagen. They then joined company executives in a celebration dinner and maiden voyage around the harbour.

Featuring more full-size staterooms and verandas than any other river cruiser in Europe, the 10 vessels were designed by legendary naval architects Yran & Storbraaten and offer state-of-the-art engineering, patented design and luxury. Onboard features include a panoramic recreation sundeck, the Aquavit Terrace with indoor/outdoor viewing area and grills, observation lounge, library and a restaurant with floor-to-ceiling windows.

The new Viking Longships will sail the line’s most popular European itineraries, including the 8-day Romantic Danube, 8-day Danube Waltz, 8-day Rhine Getaway, 10-day Tulips & Windmills, 11-day Passage to Eastern Europe and 15-day Grand European Tour. In 2014, Viking River Cruises plans to break its own record with the launch of 12 new Longships.
