Carnival Destiny Prepares To Return As Carnival Sunshine

Carnival Cruise Lines is preparing to welcome the popular Carnival Destiny back to service as the Carnival Sunshine following an extensive USD155 million rebuild. Announced early last year, the 1996-built vessel has been in drydock at Trieste receiving Carnival’s “Fun Ship 2.0” enhancements that will also see her receive a reconfigured layout, deck expansions and a new partial deck.

Caribbean-themed Accommodations

182 new staterooms, including 96 spa staterooms, will be added to the ship. The existing accommodations will also be fully revamped to feature a new tropical decor with bright colours and soothing pastels that pay homage to her Caribbean itineraries, together with new bedding, furnishings and technology including flatscreen televisions and ship-wide internet access.

Food and Drink from Around the World

Carnival Sunshine promises a wide range of onboard dining choices with an array of restaurants, cafes and bars. Food Network personality Guy Fieri lends his expertise in Guy’s Burger Joint, a free-of-charge poolside venue celebrating the chef’s California roots and love of car culture. Bluelaguna Cantina is a complimentary poolside Mexican eatery, while Cucina del Capitano and Pizzeria del Capitano serve Italian favorites in an atmosphere reminiscent of a cozy Italian home. Ji Ji Asian Kitchen features an extensive menu of Far Eastern delicacies and Asian-inspired interiors, with Fahrenheit 555 serving mouthwatering American-style steaks. To get their coffee fix, cruisers can head to the JavaBlue Cafe for handcrafted lattes, cappuccinos and other caffeinated concoctions, while the Shake Spot serves as the ideal chill location onboard with milkshakes and floats.

7 themed bars keep the alcohol flowing throughout each cruise. RedFrog Pub and the RedFrog Rum Bar feature the Caribbean’s best rums and beers (including Carnival’s own ThirstyFrog Red), Bluelaguna Tequila Bar offers a laidback Mexican atmosphere, while Cuban cocktails, music and dance can be found at the Havana Bar. Sports fans will enjoy the live sporting events and real-time sports ticker at the EA Sports Bar as they compete against each other on the latest video games from EA Sports. For sophisticated drinks, guests can visit the Alchemy Bar where mixologists craft cocktails from different elixirs and ingredients, while the Library Bar offers a quiet spot to enjoy wines in cozy comfort.

Outdoor Fun and Relaxation

Carnival’s first 3-deck high Serenity adults-only retreat can be found on the Carnival Sunshine. Offering plush chaise lounges and chairs, cascading waterfall, teak decking, a swimming pool and whirlpool, the space is a tranquil oasis for guests seeking increased privacy. A complimentary dining area ensures guests have everything they need without venturing to other parts of the ship.

The new WaterWorks aqua park is set to be a thrill with guests of all ages, incorporating the line’s iconic Twister water slide, an all-new thrill slide and a Splash Zone water play area for kids. The ship also boasts the Seaside Theatre, a high-tech LED screen offering nightly movie screenings alongside concerts, sporting events and other programming. Carnival Sunshine will also have the new SportSquare open-air recreation complex that includes a ropes course, mini golf, basketball and volleyball half-court, jogging track, table tennis, pool and foosball tables.

Headline Entertainment

Captivating live performances and spectacular stage effects create enthralling music revues onboard the ship. Cruisers can also take part in the interactive “Hasbro The Game Show” presented in the ship’s main show lounge. Carnival Sunshine will also feature Piano Bar 88, a twist on the line’s popular piano bar concept, as well as the Punchliner Comedy Club showcasing established and up-and-coming talents vetted by comedian George Lopez.

When she returns to service, Carnival Sunshine will sail an inaugural 12-day cruise from Venice to Barcelona, before spending the summer in the Mediterranean, operating 9- and 12-day cruises. Carnival Cruise Lines will be counting on the revitalized ship to improve its fortunes, which have been impacted in the wake of a highly publicized incident earlier this year with the Carnival Triumph.
