Norwegian Breakaway Christened In New York

New York City welcomed Norwegian Cruise Line’s newest fleet addition, the 4,000-passenger Norwegian Breakaway, yesterday. In true Big Apple style, the ship’s godmothers The Rockettes performed their signature kick line onboard to christen her at a pier on the Hudson River. The celebrations were emceed by “Cake Boss” Buddy Valastro and attended by Mayor Michael Bloomberg, Cardinal Timothy Dolan and artist Peter Max, who was responsible for the colourful exterior hull art featuring the city skyline and the Statue of Liberty. Norwegian Cruise Line CEO and native New Yorker Kevin Sheehan proved his own street credibility with a copy of his old license to drive a yellow taxi.

Themed after the city, the ship offers elements including ice sculptures of local icons the Brooklyn Bridge and the Chrysler Building, a version of the 80s Broadway rock musical “Rock of Ages”, a Sabrett hot dog stand and fitness classes designed by The Rockettes to burn off the extra calories. 2 members of the group will also sail on the first 6 voyages and once a month thereafter. The celebrity connection comes in the form of an outpost of Buddy Valastro’s Hoboken bakery Carlo’s Bake Shop and 3 eateries by Food Network Iron Chef Geoffrey Zakarian – Ocean Blue, The Raw Bar and Ocean Blue on the Waterfront.

Norwegian Breakaway is the biggest cruise ship to homeport year-round in Manhattan. She offers a mix of staterooms and suites, including innovative Studios designed and priced for solo travellers and exclusive suite accommodation at The Haven. Food is a central feature onboard, with 27 dining options, some of which are located at an open-air boardwalk called The Waterfront.

For recreation, there is a massive water park with 5 water slides, sports complex with 9-hole mini golf, a basketball court and rock-climbing wall, as well as 678 Ocean Place, a dining, entertainment and gaming area spanning 3 decks. Her entertainment offering includes 3 Broadway shows – 5-time Tony Awards-nominated “Rock of Ages”, dance sensation “Burn the Floor” and “Cirque Dreams & Dinner Jungle Fantasy”.

Norwegian Breakaway begins her summer itinerary of 7-day roundtrips to Bermuda, before transitioning to Bahamas and Florida itineraries in the winter. Cruisers on each sailing will be treated to an exciting fireworks show on the second last night at sea as part of the grand finale of a decadent 80s-themed deck party.
