Viking River Cruises Launches New Ocean Product Line

Award-winning river cruise operator Viking River Cruises today announced the launch of its new ocean product line, Viking Ocean Cruises. Developed with the objective to return the focus of cruising to the destination, the new line will begin sailing in May 2015 with its first vessel, the 928-passengerViking Star, on maiden voyages in the Baltic Sea, Mediterranean and Scandinavia.

Viking Star

Regarded as a small ship by today’s standards, the Viking Star has been designed by experienced naval architects and engineers, with interiors by London-based SMC Design and Los Angeles-based Rottet Studios. To be built in Italy by Fincantieri, she will be able to access most ports and true to Viking’s nordic heritage, feature understated elegance and modern design.

The ship’s staterooms and suites will all feature private verandas and luxurious amenities including King-sized beds, large showers and LCD televisions. Discerning cruisers will relish the additional space of the 14 Explorer Suites onboard. Multiple restaurants and food choices promise varied dining experiences, ranging from global cuisines at The Restaurant and the World Cafe to intimate meals at The Chef’s Table, Italian Grill and The Kitchen Table.

Viking Star will also provide enriching entertainment onboard. A dramatic 3-deck atrium showcases musicians playing regional and classical music, while the Star Theater will be used for enriching lectures and performances. A cooking school lets guests learn local specialties, while the Viking Piano Lounge, Explorers’ Lounge and Wintergarden are social spaces where guests can mingle and share stories.

She will also feature an infinity pool at sea, in addition to the main swimming pool with a retractable roof for all-weather swimming. With the holistic wellness of Scandinavia in mind, the spa will offer the centuries-old tradition of the sauna and a unique snow grotto where snowflakes gently descend from the ceiling through chilled air.

2015 Maiden Voyage Itineraries

Targeting experienced travelers, Viking Ocean Cruises’ itineraries have been curated for maximum time in port, incorporating late evening departures or overnights for guests to experience local nightlife or evening performances. The similar-duration Passage Through Western Europe cruises provide access to the heart of Europe that begins in Bergen to the Mediterranean via London and the Atlantic coasts of France and Portugal.

Cruisers may also choose from the 13-day Mediterranean Odyssey visiting Barcelona, Corfu, Dubrovnik, Livorno, Monte Carlo, Naples, Split, Toulon and Venice, or the 10-day Empires of the Mediterranean itinerary that starts in Venice and journeys to Athens, Dubrovnik, Ephesus, Kotor, Pula, Santorini and overnights in Istanbul.

All-inclusive pricing provide unparalleled value, with every cruise fare including a veranda stateroom, shore excursions in each port of call, all onboard meals and all port charges and government taxes. Passengers also enjoy many complimentary amenities as part of their fare, including alcoholic beverages with meals, wi-fi, self-service laundry and 24-hour room service.
