Sun Princess Enters Drydock For Upgrades

Following the launch of the Royal Princess last month, Princess Cruises has turned its attention on the smaller Sun Princess, with the ship embarking on a drydock enhancement in Singapore. Built in 1995 at Italian shipbuilders Fincantieri, her makeover will add new signature features and Asian-inspired touches in preparation for her year-round deployment in Japan.

The centerpiece of the work is a new atrium featuring Princess’ signature International Café with expanded seating, together with Kai Sushi, a new Japanese and seafood dining venue. The Horizon Court buffet will showcase contemporary food service areas and action stations for live a la carte cooking as well as a special pastry shop and coffee bar, refreshed décor and expanded seating. The Sterling Steakhouse will also debut in a new space, while the top deck hamburger grill will be transformed into an al fresco barbeque venue, complemented by specialty coffee options at the ice cream bar.

Beyond her food & beverage offerings, Sun Princess will also boast an improved Lotus Spa, which will receive new décor. Her staterooms and public areas will benefit from new fittings and finishes, while the hull receives a fresh coat of paint and exterior refurbishment. The new features add to the ship’s current impressive array of dining and entertainment options plus signature innovations such as the popular Movies Under the Stars poolside theater and The Sanctuary, an exclusive top-deck retreat.

Princess Cruises is inviting interested viewers and fans to follow the progress of the drydock online, where regular photo updates offering a behind-the-scenes glimpse can be viewed each day through 20 August 2013. When she returns to service, Sun Princess will set sail on a season of Asia and Australia cruises, before beginning a second season of Japan-based cruising in April 2014.
