New River Cruise Line Targets Younger Demographics

A new premium river cruise line is to launch in Europe, competing against industry leaders Avalon Waterways and Viking River Cruises. Emerald Waterways will debut in early 2014 with two new ships in early 2014 and is aimed at attracting a younger audience.

The 182-passenger, 443-foot long sister ships Emerald Star and Emerald Sky, will launch in April and June next year respectively. A key innovation for both ships will be a dual-purpose area at the aft of the ship that transforms from an indoor, heated pool with retractable roof during the day to a cinema at night, a feature new to river cruisers. Both will also offer good-sized accommodations with balconies for the majority of cabins and an outdoor dining venue.

Emerald Waterways plan to sail 7- to 14-night itineraries on the Danube, Main, Mosel and Rhine rivers. Included in the overall cruise fare are soft drinks, beer and wine at meals, shore excursions, transfers and gratuities. Additionally, the line will offer free return flights to UK-based passengers travelling from London’s Heathrow airport and other regional airports.
