Cunard Reveals Anniversary Plans

Cunard Line has confirmed 2 special events to be held next year in its spiritual home of Liverpool, in celebration of the company’s 175th anniversary. The Queen Mary 2, Queen Victoria and Queen Elizabeth will come together in May 2015 for a royal rendezvous on the Mersey River, followed by a recreation of the original transatlantic crossing of Cunard’s Britannia from Liverpool to Halifax and Boston by the Queen Mary 2 in July 2015.

Royal Rendezvous on the Mersey

Meeting for the first time in Cunard’s base up to 1967, flagship Queen Mary 2 will arrive first on 24 May 2015 for an overnight stay, joined by her sisters Queen Victoria and Queen Elizabeth the next morning.

The line’s fleet will create an unprecedented maritime spectacle when they dock at the Liverpool Cruise Terminal close to the famous Cunard Building on the Pier Head. The event is expected to attract huge crowds to the waterfront, where many have welcomed the Cunard Queens over the years.

Maiden Transatlantic Crossing Recreated

Cunard established the first scheduled service across the Atlantic Ocean in 1840 and the line’s vessels have been making crossings every year since then. 175 years to the day when the Britannia departed Liverpool, the Queen Mary 2 will replicate the historic voyage with a 10-day sailing on 4 July 2015 calling at Halifax, Boston and New York. More details of the crossing will be announced at a later date.

Founded in 1840 by Nova Scotian Sir Samuel Cunard, the line has an illustrious history carrying passengers and mail between the UK and North America, as well as trooplift duties for the British government in times of conflict. Cunard Line today is a subsidiary of Carnival Corporation & PLC, operating a fleet of 3 luxury ships.
