Thai Lion Air Launches First International Routes

New low cost carrier Thai Lion Air commenced international operations this week, flying from Bangkok’s Don Mueang International Airport to Jakarta and Kuala Lumpur. The former operates twice daily while the Malaysian capital is served daily, with both routes being operated by the airline’s 215-seat B737-900ER in an all-economy configuration.

Bangkok (Don Mueang) – Jakarta

Flight SL 8000 departs Bangkok at 1020 hrs, arriving in Jakarta at 1350 hrs before returning at 1440 hrs as flight SL 8019, touching down in Bangkok at 1815 hrs. The second flight, SL 8002, takes off from Don Mueang International Airport at 1935 hrs to land at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport at 2310 hrs, with the aircraft overnighting in Indonesia prior to operating flight SL 8005, departing Jakarta at 0620 hrs and arriving in Bangkok at 1000 hrs.

Bangkok (Don Mueang) – Kuala Lumpur

Departing Bangkok every evening at 1950 hrs, flight SL 8200 arrives in Kuala Lumpur at 2300 hrs, where the jet will stay overnight. In the morning, the return flight, SL 8201, takes off from Kuala Lumpur International Airport at 0755 hrs for a 0905 hrs arrival in the Thai capital city.

Thai Lion Air is looking to challenge regional heavyweight AirAsia and take advantage of growing intra-Southeast Asian passenger traffic. Backed by Indonesia’s largest private airline, the carrier’s flights connect with services operated by affiliates Malindo Air and Lion Air, allowing the group to further integrate its network. Plans are underway to launch a daily service between Bangkok and Singapore in February 2014, as well as an expansion of domestic services to Chiang Mai, Hat Yai and Krabi.
