Hoshinoya Kyoto Reopens After Refurbishment

Luxury Japanese ryokan Hoshinoya Kyoto has reopened following a 4-month long refurbishment. Nestled in the hills of Arashiyama alongside the Oi river, the charming resort suffered typhoon damage and closed for repairs late last year, taking the opportunity to undertake remodeling and upgrades.

Evoking a sense of traditional Japan with subtle modernity, the 25 guestrooms are decorated in a mix of 17th century Sukiya- and contemporary styles, with tatami or hardwood flooring and paper screen doors. Futons and western bedding offer variety to guests (with selected room types including an ensuite bathroom), while a host of amenities such as complimentary wireless internet access, iPod docking station, traditional Japanese games, writing set, refrigerator and coffee-/tea-making facilities mean sacrificing none of the modern conveniences synonymous with travel today.

Under the culinary direction of Executive Chef Ichiro Kubota, Hoshinoya Kyoto’s authentic kaiseki captures the essence of the region’s culinary tradition. The Main Dining Room has been awarded a prestigious Michelin star for its contemporary Japanese cuisine, while Arashiyama Kitcho remains the country’s foremost ryotei-style restaurant. New to the ryokan is Bar Kura, housed within a historical warehouse that doubles as a salon for special events by day.

The resort’s grounds feature the Water Garden and Hidden Garden, presenting a touch of zen seamlessly blending with the surrounding scenery. A public Japanese room with decor periodically changed to reflect the seasons allows guests to experience cultural activities, complemented by the open-air terrace of the floating tea room for reflection, while comfortable sofas, books, magazines and music at the Library Lounge is ideal for relaxation. Beyond Hoshinoya Kyoto, a new sightseeing boat with outdoor terrace allow guests to enjoy the natural beauty of Arashiyama gorge.

Part of Hoshino Resorts, Hoshinoya Kyoto first opened in 2009, joining the group’s flagship Hoshinoya Karuizawa resort in Nagano prefecture. In 2012, a third Hoshinoya-branded resort was added in Okinawa, with the group developing a further 2 retreats, Hoshinoya Tokyo and Hoshinoya Fuji.
