Garuda Indonesia Inducted Into Skyteam

Global airline alliance Skyteam, welcomed its 20th member today. Garuda Indonesia became the second Southeast Asia airline to join the grouping, boosting its ambitions as it seeks to spread its coverage beyond the region.

The Indonesian carrier’s customers will now enjoy seamless access to Skyteam’s 1,064 destinations, the earning and redemption of miles on member-operated flights, as well as the alliance’s customer-focused initiatives such as SkyPriority – priority airport services for Elite Plus, First and Business Class passengers.

For Skyteam, Garuda’s membership adds Jakarta as an alternative gateway to and from South East Asia and 40 new destinations within Indonesia to SkyTeam’s global network. The alliance’s presence in Australia and the Kangaroo Route receives a boost as well with service to Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth and Sydney, soon to be joined by Garuda’s new Jakarta – London (Gatwick) service in May 2014. Members of other Skyteam airlines’ frequent flyer programs can also earn and redeem miles when flying on Garuda Indonesia operated flights.

Based in the Netherlands, Skyteam has built up a significant Asian presence in recent years, challenging rivals Star Alliance and Oneworld. The grouping is now the second largest alliance in terms of passengers carried and membership.
