Avalon Waterways Christens Newest “Suite Ship”

River cruise line Avalon Waterways has launched its newest vessel on the banks of the River Danube. The 166-guest Avalon Illumination is the eighth in the line’s series of Panorama suite ships and was christened by Australian model and television presenter Deborah Hutton with the traditional smashing of a bottle of Viennese Schlumberger against the hull, to classical music in true Austrian pageantry.

Designed with input from Avalon’s travellers, the Avalon Illumination (like her 7 sister ships) boasts 2 decks of 83 spacious staterooms with curving walls and floor-to-ceiling windows opening out to French balconies. Dining options onboard are found at the main restaurant and the indoor Panorama Bistro serving light meals. In summer, lunch is also served at the alfresco Sky Bistro and all guests have access to the complimentary 24-hour tea and coffee station. Public areas, comprising a ship-long sky deck, a covered Sky Lounge and indoor lounges, offer plenty of social space, while other onboard amenities include a whirlpool and games area, fitness center, internet room and hair salon.

In her inaugural season, the ship will sail itineraries ranging from 8- to 24-days on the Rhine, Main and Danube Rivers with stops at major cities including Amsterdam, Belgrade, Bratislava, Budapest, Cologne, Nuremberg and Vienna. She will also take guests on more exotic Danube-only itineraries between Budapest and the Black Sea, passing through picturesque Balkan landscapes.

The fast-expanding Avalon Waterways takes advantage of a boom in River cruising. In 2015, the line will add another 2 more suite ships (Avalon Tranquility II and Avalon Tapestry II) in Europe, as well as being the design to Southeast Asia for the first time with vessels operating in Myanmar and the Mekong River.
