Qatar Airways Welcomes First Airbus A380s

Qatar Airways has welcomed the Airbus A380 to its fast growing fleet, with its first double-deck jet touching down at Hamad International Airport following a delivery ceremony at Airbus’ Hamburg factory. The arrival will finally see the Doha-based airline join the list of operators for the aircraft, following months of delays attributed to the quality of the interior finishing.

Configured in a 3-class layout, the airline’s A380 offers 517 seats across 2 decks. Adopting an understated luxury style, the jet omits the enclosed suite products for 8 semi-private First Class seats (exclusive to Qatar Airways’ new flagship aircraft), while 48 Business Class and 461 Economy Class seats occupy the rest of the aircraft.

A premium lounge is located towards the rear of the upper deck and has been designed to exude the feel of a private executive club for First and Business Class passengers, who can relax and mingle on several comfortable leather-upholstered benches. All passengers will also enjoy the latest version of the Oryx inflight entertainment programme, incorporating an Android open platform with intuitive swipe functions for an improved user interface.

Complementing the onboard experience are the facilities at Hamad International Airport, with 5 contact gates designed and dedicated to the type. The A380 is scheduled to operate its inaugural revenue service for the airline on 10 October 2014 between Doha and London (Heathrow), with Paris (Charles de Gaulle) to follow later in the month. Qatar Airways’ third and fourth A380s are currently being fitted-out at Airbus’ Hamburg facility and will be delivered before the end of 2014 as part of the 10 firm orders and 3 options the carrier holds.
