Costa Cruises Welcomes New Flagship

Italian line Costa Cruises officially welcomed its new EUR550 million flagship, Costa Diadema, in a glittering ceremony in Genoa. Taking place at Ponte dei Mille in the city’s historic maritime station, the event began with a parade of the ship’s godmother Carolina Miceli (an Italian travel agent chosen as part of a worldwide contest) together with her international maids-of-honour from Germany, France, Spain and China, followed by a blessing from Cardinal Angelo Bagnasco, the archbishop of Genoa, as Captain Massimo Garbarino joined Miceli to christen the vessel.

Invited guests then enjoyed a light and fireworks display, followed by an onboard gala dinner created by Costa’s Michelin-star chef Fabio Cucchelli. They were also treated to a performance of the new Sapori d’Italia production, featuring baritone Simone Baldazzi, the acrobatic duo Celia & Julien and the Phly Boyz, concluding the night with a masked party.

Dubbed the “Regina del Mediterraneo” (Queen of the Mediterranean), Costa Diadema offers 1,862 cabins and is designed to showcase the best of Italy. She introduces features new to the line, including a wraparound outdoor promenade on deck 5 with 6 cabanas and 2 hot tubs, as well as favorites such as the 3-deck Samsara Spa. An array of bars and restaurants overlooking the promenade recreate the feel of a summertime Mediterranean beach and new entertainment options promise to enthrall guests, amongst them the Star Laser (with interactive laser games), the Portobello Market Piazza’s 1,100-square meter shopping area and the Country Rock Club which will host tribute concerts to legendary rock bands.

Costa Diadema set sail for the port of Savona after her christening, where she will be based until the end of the 2015 summer Mediterranean season. The ship will offer 7-night roundtrip cruises out of her homeport, calling at Barcelona, La Spezia, Marseille, Naples and Palma de Mallorca.
