Airbus A350 Enters Service With Qatar Airways

Qatar Airways and Airbus celebrated a milestone today with the first commercial flight of the new A350-900XWB jet. The Oneworld member airline’s flight QR 067 departed Doha at 0749 hrs, arriving in Frankfurt at 1220 hrs where she was greeted by airport officials, company executives and aviation enthusiasts.

Prior to departure, inaugural celebrations were in full swing at Hamad International Airport. Each passenger was presented with a scale model of the A350 and a flight certificate to commemorate the occasion, while staff roamed the gate area with macaroons and non-alcoholic cocktails.

The advanced composite aircraft features a large entrance atrium, panoramic windows, LED mood lighting and oversized overhead luggage bins, promising an improved cabin experience for passengers over current generation jets and a lower operating cost base for airlines. In a 2-class configuration, 36 Business and 247 Economy Class passengers are accommodated on each flight.

Alongside Frankfurt, Qatar Airways plans to operate the A350 to New York, secondary European cities and Asian destinations. The Doha-based carrier has ordered 80 of the jets (comprising 42 A350-900s and 37 A350-1000s), which will be used to replace its current A330 fleet and boost capacity.
