airberlin To Introduce Short-Haul Business Class

German carrier and Oneworld member airberlin will introduce a new short-haul Business Class product, in a shift of its intra-European strategy.

The airline has long offered a premium product on long-haul flights, but an Economy-only product for its short-haul routes, resulting in an inconsistency for travellers connecting through its hubs in Berlin and Dusseldorf. In a bid to offer a consistent service product, the airline will reserve the first row in the cabins of its Airbus narrowbody jets for Business Class passengers.

Similar to other European business class products, passengers are guaranteed an empty middle seat, 32 inches of legroom and complimentary food & beverage service onboard. On the ground, airberlin will offer Business Class passengers a priority check-in desk, fast-track security and lounge access with exclusive waiting areas and priority boarding before Economy Class passengers at the gate.

airberlin continues to transition from a low cost carrier towards a hybrid business model as it looks to improve its operational and financial performance. It remains to be seen whether the new short-haul business class will be successful in gaining the carrier a larger share of the market.
