Four Points by Sheraton Bangkok Sukhumvit 15

Prologue

Promising uncomplicated comfort and exceptional value, Four Points by Sheraton was one of the first select service hotel brands to debut in Thailand when it opened in December 2010. Three years on, it has been steadily joined by properties from rival chains wanting a slice of the market. We visit the hotel to see how it is performing amidst the increased competition.

Location / Accessibility

Situated in the heart of the busy Sukhumvit district, Four Points by Sheraton Bangkok Sukhumvit 15 is easily accessible with the BTS Skytrain’s Asok station and Metropolitan Rapid Transit (MRT) Sukhumvit station connecting the hotel to the rest of Bangkok. We utilized the convenient Airport Rail Link to Makkasan City Air Terminal and arrived at the hotel within 30 minutes of leaving Suvarnabhumi International Airport. Shoppers will relish the fact that the malls and shops of Sukhumvit Road, including the new Terminal 21 shopping mall, are within walking distance from the hotel.

Arrival Experience

We entered the lobby of the Four Points by Sheraton Bangkok Sukhumvit 15 after a short walk from the Sukhumvit MRT station. The evening peak hour meant a line for check-in, but our presence in the queue was promptly acknowledged before one of the agents ushered us forward.

While she was friendly and confirmed our nightly room rate per the standard procedure, we felt some aspects of the arrival experience could be improved. In a time where hotel groups vie fiercely for the loyalty of the customer, we were disappointed that there was little reference to our Starwood Preferred Guest membership. We were not expecting additional benefits, but a simple recognition of our loyalty would have been nice.

Guestrooms

Prior to arrival, we had requested for a room on a higher floor and double beds. These were duly assigned and the proximity to the elevators was a bonus. We were impressed by the large size of the room (one of the biggest we have seen in Bangkok) and the minimalist decor in line with the brand’s uncomplicated positioning.

The Four Comfort bed was of a good size and firmness, offering a good night’s rest after the fatigue of the inbound flight and subsequent braving of the city’s notorious traffic. Pillows were plentiful and firm to our liking, with a duvet that kept temperatures comfortable given the strong air-conditioning. A comfortable lounger complemented the bed and was our favorite position for lounging and light reading.

The bathroom was equally spacious and offered a separate deep-soaking tub and shower. We liked the plush towels and accompanying bath products, although having booked for double occupancy we would have appreciated another set. Some of the trimmings and finishes were also showing their age with scuffs and peels. The bathroom also lacked a telephone within, which we found odd given that this is a standard fixture at major chain hotels.

Entertainment and connectivity options consisted of a selection of cable television channels and pay-per-view movies, while personal content may also be viewed from the 32-inch flatscreen television by utilizing the connectivity panel built into the workdesk. Every guestroom also had a DVD player for use and wireless internet access, although we feel that this should be complimentary to all guests.

Dining

For a property of its size, Four Points by Sheraton Bangkok Sukhumvit 15 offers a wide range of food & beverage outlets. We had breakfast daily at The Eatery, which provided an extensive buffet spread with the usual cold cuts, breads, cereals and hot food together with live stations for eggs and local Thai soup noodles. We appreciated how the hotel tries to cater for varied tastes with Chinese, Japanese and Korean breakfast items.

Evenings were spent at the rooftop amBar or BeerVault, the hotel’s specialty pub which has garnered a reputation in the city. The former is a relaxed, chill-out spot for catching up and socializing over mixed beverages and Arabic shisha, while the latter is more boisterous with positive energy from the live music and casual atmosphere.

A fourth outlet, Wrapped, serves deli items for takeaway.

Facilities

4 meeting rooms onsite, Pinwheel 1 & 2 on the ground floor and Breeze 1 & 2 on the rooftop of the Garden Wing, can accommodate small- to medium-sized groups. The latter also features a canopied outdoor function area suited for informal garden parties and social gatherings.

Recreation facilities include a decently-sized lap pool and roof terrace, together with a well-equipped fitness center. These were situated on the rooftops of the 2 wings and connected only on the ground floor, which we felt could be better in terms of design for greater convenience.

A semi-enclosed area in the lobby serves as a stylish business lounge with iMacs and printing facilities to help guests stay connected. We reckon it would be beneficial to travellers without personal computing devices on the road. Another feature which we liked was the complimentary tuk-tuk shuttle to the nearby malls, metro station and the Aloft Bangkok Sukhumvit 11, a convenient means of getting around the neighbourhood.

Service / Staff

Generally, we found the staff at the hotel to be friendly and comforting. That said, we did experience some inconsistencies in the services provided, as was the case regarding a coffee token which we did not receive but was provided to other guests.

Verdict

We found the Four Points by Sheraton Bangkok Sukhumvit 15 good value for travellers to the Thai capital. The hotel’s fantastic location is a definite plus and comprehensive facilities make it a winner for business or leisure travellers. However, there remains room for improvement in the areas of consistency and overall maintenance of the hard product, which it will have to pay close attention to given the growing rival options to guests.
