Khang Residency Thimphu

Elegantly appointed with traditional indigenous and contemporary elements, Khang Residency has quickly built up a reputation as one of Thimphu’s premier tourist-standard accommodations. We experience the hotel during a visit to the Bhutanese capital.

Location / Accessibility

Located at the lower Motithang district, the hotel is well-connected by road to Paro International Airport and the border town of Phuentsholing. Thimphu’s city center and quiet cultural monuments are a short drive away, while panoramic views of the valley can be afforded from Khang Residency’s hillside position.

Arrival Experience

We stepped into the lobby of the Khang Residency after an hour-long drive from the airport and were promptly invited to take a seat. Warm towels were presented by the staff as registration procedures were completed and room keys issued. During the entire process, the staff had discreetly brought our luggage up to our guestroom (although they left it outside rather than placing it inside).

The decor of the guest floors was predominantly white walls and granite tiles with the occasional artwork or furniture. We found this rather drab and an opportunity for showcasing colourful local paintings and motifs.

Our first impression of the room was one of space, with a simple elegance reminiscent of a humble home accentuated by hardwood flooring and intricate carpets. Being a corner room, a side window complemented the main floor-to-ceiling window opening up to a balcony. A Bhutanese touch lay in the form of a local painting over the twin beds, which were firm and provided good sleep support that was much appreciated after a day of trekking.

The bathroom was equally spacious, offering a separate shower and bathtub. Heated floors were a simple yet comforting touch and we appreciated the hot water with the accompanying bath amenities. However, we were disappointed at the weak water pressure in the shower resulting in an inadequate water flow.

We also felt that the television could be larger (given the size of the guestroom), although the channel selection was extensive with local, international and Indian channels. Guest amenities were adequate with an electronic safe, well-stocked minibar, coffee-/tea-making facilities and complimentary bottled water replenished daily.

An intimate restaurant and bar offers international and Bhutanese meals daily, coupled with prompt service from the staff. Breakfast items were made-to-order from a menu with substantial portions, although meat protein was limited to pork sausages only. These were accompanied by excellent coffee or tea.

For dinner, a set menu consisting of rice and local dishes was offered. Designed for foreign palates, portions were more than adequate and there was a good mix of tasty meats and vegetables dishes.

With the majority of visitors to Bhutan on guided tours, it was understandable that the hotel’s facilities were limited. There was a small, functional gymnasium (although this was closed during our visit) and bicycles could be loaned by guests. Complimentary wi-fi was available throughout the property, while a compact business centre provided computers and reading materials. For wellness, guests may also request for massages and treatments at the in-house spa located in the basement of the hotel.

Service / Staff

The staff members that we interacted with during our stay were friendly and polite. In terms of service, we felt they were satisfactory in fulfilling the basic needs of guests, although there was room to improve when following up with guests during extraordinary instances. We experienced a power outage to the neighbourhood, but no staff member came by to check on us nor mention about it the next morning.

While certain fittings and procedures could be enhanced, we recognize also the relative infancy of the tourism industry and infrastructure in Bhutan. As a base from which to explore Thimphu, Khang Residency fulfills the basic requirements of clean and comfortable accommodation, food safety and general security for travellers.
